Launch of the first all-electric Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 car in Italy used Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro
Blackmagic Design revealed that the campaign to launch the first all-electric Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 car in Italy used the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro digital film cameras and the editing, colorization, visual effects (VFX ) and audio post-production by DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing and color correction. Directed by Alessandro Di Cristanziano, cinematographer Leonardo Cestari filmed the digital campaign with the help of drone pilot Simone Castagna, camera operator Leo Papuluzzo and editor and colorist Andrea Pescini. With a special DJ set from the terrace of the Lumen Museum of Mountain Photography on Mount Kronplatz (Plan de Corones), the filming of the spot took place over three days in the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige.
“Recognized worldwide for its prestige, charm and class, we wanted the campaign’s look to express the values of the German car brand’s philosophy”, begins Cestari.
“I opted for Pocket Cinema Cameras as they are incredibly versatile, especially given the logistical challenges of the various mountain elements that constituted a significant part of this shoot. Also, I love its excellent cinematic qualities,” he added.
Shooting from sunrise to sunset posed some challenges creatively. “In particular, the sun behind us was very strong compared to the light in the mountains, as it was between the branches, generating areas of intense light and shadow,” explains Cestari. “However, the wide latitude and dynamic range of the 6K sensor ensured that we could balance these two completely different lights with ease. In addition, fifth-generation color science has helped to get the truest essence of color.”
We mounted the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro in a car using a spring system to film footage of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 during the mountain trail. The interior sequences of the promotional video were filmed inside a garage using an electronic dolly that helped to obtain elegant images with slight movement.
According to Cestari, the production relied exclusively on LED lights inside the garage. “For example, we achieved a single red on the panel using a dimmable LED tube from Astera, and a SkyPanel from ARRI helped with the fill light,” he revealed. “By utilizing the camera’s native ISO of 3200, we were able to comfortably move around in the darkness of the garage and capture sharp images thanks to the camera’s dual gain sensor.”
A drone carrying a Pocket Cinema Camera 4K equipped with a 10mm lens captured the numerous aerial sequences of the promotional video to add a more contemporary feel to the campaign.
The production utilized a ProRes 422 HQ workflow shooting in 4K UltraHD and DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing and color correction. “I really liked being able to work so easily through the entire editing and coloring workflow in one piece of software,” says Cestari.
“I chose Pocket Cinema cameras because they are compact and practical for handheld and aerial shots and work well with the gimbal system we use to accompany the car,” concludes Cestari. “They gave us all the versatility we needed in a lightweight, easy-to-carry design.”
