Designed for broadcasters who need capacity and portability, the new ATEM SDI family is built for quick setup and ease of use.
Blackmagic Design has announced a new family of extremely portable ATEM SDI live production switchers with professional 3G SDI connections. Designed for broadcasters who need power and portability, the new ATEM SDI family is built for quick setup and ease of use. Despite the portable design, ATEM SDI switchers are surprisingly powerful, with standard converters on all inputs, integrated Fairlight audio mixer with six-band parametric EQ, compressor and limiter on all inputs, internal DVEs, chroma switches, professional transitions. and much more. ATEM SDI makes it much faster to create professional live productions using multiple cameras. Plus, it’s ideal for professional-quality live streaming to YouTube, Facebook, and more!
Customers have four SDI inputs on the ATEM SDI and ATEM SDI Pro ISO models and eight SDI inputs on the ATEM SDI Extreme ISO model. All SDI inputs include pattern and resynchronization converters, as well as DVEs for picture-in-picture effects. The USB works like a webcam to connect video to computers, while the Pro and Extreme models have built-in streaming.

The ATEM SDI’s compact, all-in-one design includes a control panel and connections. The front panel includes easy-to-use buttons for selecting sources, video effects and transitions. The source buttons are large, making it possible to use them by touch, allowing the presenter to operate the cuts. Customers also have buttons for audio mixing. The ATEM SDI Pro and Extreme models include buttons for recording and streaming control, as well as selection buttons that allow customers to switch video output between program, camera feeds and multi-view. On the rear panel, there are SDI connections for cameras, additional inputs for a microphone, USB for a webcam, as well as several auxiliary SDI outputs for program video.
With four or eight video inputs, depending on the model, on the ATEM SDI customers can connect multiple cameras for different angles of performance. All video sources will resynchronize with the switcher, even if they operate with different video standards. Everything works, so setup on location is easy, and customers don’t have to worry about technical issues.
The ATEM SDI Pro and ATEM SDI Extreme models include a built-in hardware-based streaming engine for live streaming over Ethernet connections. This means customers can live stream to YouTube, Facebook and Twitch in superior quality with no dropped frames and simplified settings. Just select the streaming service and enter the streaming key. There are palettes in ATEM Software Control for configuring streaming, and streaming status is also displayed in multi-view. Streaming status is easy to understand as the data rate indicator shows the internet speed required for the video format customers are using.
If users are performing live production on location, then the ATEM SDI Pro and Extreme models support connecting an Apple or Android phone to the USB port to use mobile data. This also works as an excellent backup for the main Ethernet connection.
The ATEM SDI Pro and Extreme models also support direct recording of streaming data to USB flash drives. Then customers can make long-lasting recordings to the same H.264 video files with the AAC audio they streamed and upload directly to any online video site such as YouTube or Vimeo. It’s also possible to record to multiple drives using a USB hub, so when a first drive gets full, recording can continue to a second drive uninterrupted. Recording settings and drive selection are set in ATEM Software Control, and customers can also view recording status in multiview.
The ATEM SDI Pro ISO and Extreme ISO models allow customers to edit live events as they can record multiple video streams, including clean feeds of all inputs and the program, all at the same time. Images used in the media pool are also saved with the video files. Video files include metadata tags such as synchronized timecode and camera numbering. Customers can re-edit their programs with new color treatments, effects and graphics. Even the audio sources are recorded, so you can remix the sound professionally.
ISO templates can also save a DaVinci Resolve project file, so with a single click, customers can access live productions as if they were edited video. All cuts, dissolves and graphics from the media pool will be loaded, so customers can adjust edit points or even completely replace plans. DaVinci Resolve’s Sync Bin lets you edit images with a multi-view interface that’s quick and easy to use. All ISO files will be automatically aligned by timecode, so customers can browse and view all camera angles in perfect sync.
Each 3G-SDI video input has its own standards converter, so ATEM SDI will convert 1080p, 1080i and 720p sources to the switcher’s video standard automatically. The SDI outputs are true auxiliary outputs, so customers can configure each video source routed to each SDI output. All outputs can be connected to cameras as they include camera control and signaling information. On the more advanced ATEM SDI Pro and ATEM SDI Extreme models, the HDMI output can also be selected to display the built-in multiview.
The ATEM Software Control app unlocks the full potential of ATEM SDI, giving you access to all of the switcher’s features. The ATEM Software Control interface is comprised of a visual switcher, with parameter palettes for making quick adjustments. While it is usually possible to connect via USB, connecting via Ethernet allows multiple users to connect to the ATEM SDI using separate copies of the ATEM Software Control on different computers. Customers can even save the switcher state as an XML file. If you need to play back clips, you can also control HyperDeck disc recorders via Ethernet.

ATEM SDI Extreme models include four upstream chroma keyers for customers to create incredible virtual sets. With four independent chroma keys, customers have one keyer per camera and can create a virtual set for up to four cameras. The ATEM SDI Extreme has eight inputs, four for the cameras and another four that can be connected to a computer with a virtual stage to obtain rendered backgrounds. Or, if they don’t need to move their cameras, customers can create virtual sets with the fixed camera by loading backgrounds with pre-rendered images from the media players and the media pool. In addition, they can define macros to change cameras and load the correct background in media players.
In addition to two independent DVEs on the ATEM SDI Extreme models, there is also a powerful multi-layer SuperSource processor with four additional DVE layers and a background layer. All appear as an additional input source on the ATEM SDI Extreme. Any ATEM SDI Extreme video input can be used on each SuperSource DVE so everything is layered on top of a custom media pool background.
When doing larger live productions with multiple cameras, it is very useful to view all video sources at the same time on a single monitor. The ATEM SDI Pro and ATEM SDI Extreme models include a professional multi-view that lets you track all video input, preview and program on a single SDI monitor. All camera views include cue indicators so customers know when each source is live. Each view also features custom labels and audio meters. In addition, ATEM SDI Extreme models allow you to select up to 16 custom views. Multiview even includes recording, streaming, and Fairlight audio mixer status information.

“The new ATEM SDI live production switcher is perfect for broadcasters who want advanced professional features and who are also looking for extreme portability,” says Grant Petty, executive director of Blackmagic Design. “There are three great models with 3G SDI video connections and great features like DVEs for picture-in-picture effects, graphics, transitions, advanced chroma keying and Fairlight audio mixer. The ATEM SDI is very exciting, and we can’t wait to see what customers will do with these new models.”
